What is Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC)?

Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) is an autoimmune condition which damages the bile ducts within the liver. This interrupts the flow of bile and causes it to build up in the liver, damaging the liver cells and causing inflammation. Over time the inflammation can cause fibrosis and cirrhosis.

Diagnosis is via a blood test for the presence of Anti-Mitochondrial Antibody (AMA). This blood test may be followed by a liver biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. 90% of PBC patients are female.

Many people with PBC respond well to treatment.
